An honest insight into the messy reality of therapeutically parenting teenagers.

Award-winning columnist and adoptive parent Sally Donovan offers savvy, compassionate advice on how to be 'good enough' in the face of both day-to-day and more bewildering

challenges - such as drug use, social media and child to parent violence, while helping develop and nurture a teenager through to adulthood.

Full of affecting and hilarious stories drawn from life in the Donovan household, The Unofficial Guide to Therapeutic Parenting offers parents a refreshing counterblast to stuffy

parenting manuals -- read it, weep, laugh and learn.
Sally pulls no punches in this insightful, compassionate and beautifully-written book. The honesty and sensitivity with which she describes the experiences of parenting teenagers who have experienced trauma will profoundly resonate with many. Compelling, validating, tough and yet uplifting, its authenticity is firmly rooted in experience. Parents/ carers - I strongly suggest you read this book as an exercise in the self-care that Sally so wisely advocates for. Professionals - this is a fantastic resource. I strongly recommend a read [or three]!
Sally Donovan grew up in a small town in England and studied English at Exeter University. After 10 years working in commercial management, she retrained for a new career in horticulture, working for several years in historic gardens. In 2004, Sally and her husband Rob adopted two children from local authority care. Like many children adopted from within the UK today, Sally and Rob's children had suffered neglect and abuse in their early lives. Together they have journeyed through the many challenges of building a family with children so profoundly affected by their early trauma.

Sally is also the author of the classic memoir No Matter What and The Unofficial Guide to Adoptive Parenting, both published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers.
