This is a core resource for nursing educators and students at all levels who seek fundamental perspectives on the art and science of caring. The text comprises 37 classic book chapters and journal articles written by leaders in the field and illuminate the evolution of the caring paradigm--from its beginnings as a philosophical/ethical/theoretical guide to nursing, to implications for the future development of caring science. Co-published with the Watson Caring Science Institute (WCSI), it will also be a primary resource for students attending WCSI programs and for in-service education programs, especially in hospitals with, or seeking, Magnet status. Each section features an introductory essay illuminating important concepts, followed by reflective questions appropriate for baccalaureate, master's, and doctoral levels. Marlaine C. Smith, RN, PhD, AHN-BC, FAAN, is Dean and Helen K. Persson Eminent Scholar in the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing, Florida Atlantic University (FAU). From 1988 to 2006 she was on the faculty of the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center School of Nursing, serving as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and the Director of the Center for Integrative Caring Practice for six years. She has been a nurse educator since 1976 with other faculty appointments at Duquesne University, Pennsylvania State University, and LaRoche College in Pittsburgh. Dr. Smith's research has focused on outcomes of touch therapies as an expression of caring. She has written a variety of theoretical, philosophical, research, practice, and review articles related to caring. Her most recent work has been the development of a middle range theory of unitary caring. With Marilyn Parker she co-edited the third edition of Nursing Theories and Nursing Practice. Marian C. Turkel, RN, PhD, NEA-BC, is the Director of Professional Nursing Practice and Research at Einstein Healthcare Network (EHN) and faculty associate of the Watson Caring Science Institute (WCSI). Under her leadership and guidance, EHN received designation in 2010 as a WCSI Affiliate. As part of the faculty of WCSI, Dr. Turkel works with various hospitals on the practical application of the theory and does presentations on caring science with an emphasis on education, leadership, practice and research. Over the course of her career she has worked in collaboration with Dr Marilyn Ray and was the co-principal investigator on almost one million dollars in federal research funding to study the relationship among caring, economics, and patient outcomes. Dr. Turkel has authored a textbook on strategies for obtaining Magnet Program Recognition , published in peer reviewed journals, contributed chapters in nursing textbooks, and presented at numerous national and international conferences. She has been actively involved with the International Association for Human Caring for approximately 20 years and assumed the role of President June 2012. Nursing Caring and Complexity Science for Human Environment Well Being that she co-edited with the late Dr. Alice Davidson and Dr. Marilyn Ray received the American Journal of Nursing Book of the Year Award (2011) in the category of Professional Development and Issues. Zane Robinson Wolf, PhD, RN, FAAN, is Dean and Professor, School of Nursing and Health Sciences, La Salle University. She returned to full-time teaching in the fall of 2012. She practiced as a critical care and medical surgical nurse and has worked in nursing education, teaching in diploma, associate, baccalaureate, masters, and doctoral nursing programs. She teaches courses on patient safety, nursing research, evidence-based practice, and caring and continues to conduct qualitative and quantitative research on medication errors, nurse caring, nursing education concerns, and other topics. Dr. Wolf is a board member of the Institute for Safe Medication Practices and most recently, Fox Chase Cancer Center. She reviews manuscripts for various nursing and healthcare journals. Dr. Wolf has been an editor of theInternational Journal for Human Caring since 1999. She is a former board member and past president of the International Association for Human Caring. Dr. Wolf has hosted three International Caring Conferences in Philadelphia, PA. The Christine E. Lynne College of Nursing of Florida Atlantic University honored her by designating her as Caring Scholar.
